Kyle Edmund is still in the early days of his comeback from his fitness issues that had plagued him earlier. And Ruud took full toll of the difference in pedigree and form to roll past his British opponent in straight sets.
Ruud was on court for two hours and 22 minutes in which he carved out a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win over Edmund.
Breaking his opponent six times in the encounter, Ruud was never really in trouble despite having fallen 1-2 behind in the first after Edmund drew first blood.
The second set saw Ruud miss a chance to serve it out at 5-4, only to break his opponent again and complete the formalities. And from there on it was a case of easing past the tiring Edmund in the third set.

van Rijthoven Finally Wins Another Match (and How!)
After having surprised the world of tennis on grass this season, van Rijthoven would have been expected to do a lot better than he did in the lead-up to this US Open.
After all, not too many would have expected him to lift the Rosmalen title which included wins over Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev. And then again, a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon as well.
Following that, however, van Rijthoven had lost in the first round of the Newport Open and not featured in any of the US Open Series competitions. An indoor hard court Challenger event in Indianapolis is all he managed in July where he won a round but nothing since.
Which is also why he came into this match against Zhizhen Zhang as a second favourite and for most parts, played like one.
Van Rijthoven needed to come back from two sets down and saved seven match-points before winning it in two sets! As escapes it would probably remain one of the best of this tournament.
Ruud will be a different proposition though.

van Rijthoven might have performed a Houdini’s routine in his opener and Ruud might be more of clay-courter but there is too much gap in the current quality of the two. We don’t expect an upset but at best van Rijthoven could win a set.
