Kaia Kanepi v Tereza Martincova Head to Head

Kanepi leads the head-to-head over Martincova, having beaten the Czech in a qualifying round match in Moscow in 2019.

Kanepi Could Surprise Again

Kaia Kanepi remains as dangerous as ever despite being 37. The Estonian power hitter has recorded some stirring wins over top 10 players at Grand Slam level and she seems to relish the chance of playing the such caliber of opponents.

While her motivation remains the same for every opponent, Kanepi missed out on a seeding spot in unfortunate circumstances. The US Open entry list was released last month, and that was before the Estonian made that terrific run to the finals of Washington.

Her ranking rose to No. 34 just after and which would have in effect given her a seeding spot with a few withdrawals among the top 32 players.

Nonetheless, Kanepi will be looking to extend her good record at Flushing Meadows. She is one of the very few active players in the draw who have reached the second week in New York.

Martincova In Poor Form

Tereza Martincova is 12-22 in main draw matches in 2022. And what is even more worrying, the Czech has won 28 sets from a possible 74 and will definitely be a huge underdog in her matchup against Kanepi.

Martincova has been ranked as high as No. 41, but has been blighted by injuries and inconsistent results in the past. Five of her 12 wins came in two tournaments (a quarterfinal run in St. Petersburg and a semifinal run in Nottingham), wherein the latter she picked up a right knee injury.

She lost her next three matches on the spin after that injury but restored her fitness levels at the start of the North American hard-court swing.

The 27-year-old qualified at both WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati but did not make a deep run in either of those tournaments.

Kanepi v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Martincova hasn’t won a match at the US Open in four attempts and I don’t think she will start now. Kanepi is clearly on a higher ceiling.
