Cori Gauff v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Head to Head

There had been some worries around Gauff’s fitness after she had retired from her first round match at Cincinnati two weeks ago. Showing no such signs, however, Gauff completed the facile win as she now looks to emulate her best ever showing at the year’s final Grand Slam – a third round appearance in 2019.

Ruse Breaks Five-Match Hoodoo
It had been a horrible run for Ruse coming into this competition and when she fell a set behind Daria Saville it looked like history was repeating itself.
Not too many would have expected to have overcome a set deficit after having lost eight of the previous nine matches played, like had been the case with Ruse. Here, Ruse clawed back, overcoming five breaks of serves in the match to edge past her Aussie opponent with six of them for her own self.
Following an easy equaliser in the second set, Ruse broke Saville in the first game of the decider, lost her own serve in the eighth but a crucial break in the very next game earned her a spot in the second round.
This was Ruse’s first win at the US Open and second overall at a Grand Slam event. Can she make it two in two here?
