Van de Zandschulp Survives Five-Set Thriller Against Qualifier
Botic van de Zandschulp survived an opening round test against the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac, edging past the qualifier in a five-set thriller.
The Dutch, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 22 on Monday, lost the first set, but tied things up by winning the second set tiebreak. He dominated the third set to take a two sets to one lead. The World No. 126, however, stayed in the contest by dominating the fourth set and forcing the decider.
It was a highly competitive final set, with both players holding serve over the first 10 games, before the Dutchman finally surged ahead by breaking in the 11th game and then served out the match in the next for a 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
The four-hour-and-10-minute contest saw Van de Zandschulp strike 17 aces and 68 winners to Machac’s 8 aces and 34 winners. The Dutch player also doubled faulted 12 times and made 63 unforced errors in the match, while his opponent had just 4 double faults and 42 unforced errors.
Van de Zandschulp, who reached his maiden ATP final in Munich this year, was a semifinalist in Winton Salem last week. He is making his second appearance at the U.S. Open following a quarterfinal finish on debut last year.

Moutet Advances After Wawrinka Retires
He was shocked in the third qualifying round by China’s Wu Yibing, but Corentin Moutet still found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser and the 23-year-old Frenchman made the most of the opportunity putting up a solid display against Stan Wawrinka before the Swiss retired from the contest.
The left-handed Moutet broke twice to build a 5-2 lead in the first set; the 2016 U.S. Open champion pulled a break back but it wasn’t enough as the World no. 112 served out the opening set without any more hiccups.
In the second, Wawrinka held serve from 0-40 in the fifth game and saved two more break points in the 11th game. Neither player could break and the set eventually needed a tiebreak. Wawrinka missed out on two set points, while Moutet capitalised on his first set point to go up 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
Wawrinka, who had twice called trainer during changeover to get his finger checked, withdrew from the match after the second set, thus allowing the lucky loser to progress to the second round for the third consecutive year. He made it to the third round in 2020 and lost in the Round of 64 last year.
Moutet had won his first two qualifying rounds without dropping a set, but was beaten by wu in straight sets. But having found some rhythm against Wawrinka he will be looking to put up a strong show in the next round.
