Nono Borges v Yibing Wu Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between then 25 year old Portuguese, and his Chinese opponent, three years his junior.

Borges Beats Wildcard in Five Setter

Borgos had already reasons to be proud of his efforts in New York after coming through qualifying to make the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time, and he can be even more pleased after surviving a five set battle with the local wildcard Ben Shelton, in a match that fluctuated one way and then the other.

The first set was dominated by serve, although Borges had a set point saved. Shelton then had a set point in the subsequent tie-break, but it was Borges who won it in the end.

Again the second set was largely a service battle, although Borges had already saved two break points before he dropped his serve. That gave Shelton the chance to serve out to level the match which he did.

The third set proved that this was a match of fine margins as first one and then the other dropped his serve, resulting in another tie-break. Both dropped their serves in that several times, but Borges claimed it by virtue of being able to hold his more often.

The fourth set was as close as the first three, and resulted in yet one more tie break. This developed into something of a marathon, and Shelton had three break points saved, before the Portuguese saw  a match point slip through his fingers.

Finally, though the wildcard claimed the point he needed to take the match into a deciding set.

That, though, was decided, when Borges got his first break in a regular game in the match. It gave him the chance to finally put the contest to bed, which he duly took.

Wu Routs Georgian Seed

Wu’s progress to the first round in New York was even more creditable, given the calibre of the three men he beat in the qualifying competition – Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, Stefano Travaglia of Italy, and Corentin Moutet of France.

Few, though, would have given him much chance against the number 31 seed, Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in their first round match.

Wu, though, started on the front foot, and Basilashvili had already saved three break points before he conceded the only service game of the first set.

Midway through the second set, the Georgian had two break points of his own, could not convert either of them, and was immediately made to pay when he was broken again,

Basilashvili had brief hopes when, with Wu serving for the set, he held four more break points, but again was unable to convert any of them.

And that seemed to sap all the morale out of Basilashvili, as he barely won a point after that. Wu was able to sweep through the third set without dropping a game, and exerting the minimum of effort.

Borges v Wu Prediction and Tip

Whatever happens, one of these qualifiers is guaranteed a third round spot on their Grand Slam debuts. Wu caused a major upset by the way that he beat Basilashvili, but, given the difference in their world rankings, Burges will consider himself the favourite.
