Carlos Alcaraz v Federico Coria Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that happened at the Rio in 2020, with Coria winning it in three sets.

Alcaraz Stretched But Comes Through in Straight Sets

For a player who had given into the encounter as a 1/50 favourite to win it, Alcaraz wasn’t at his most fluent but in the end came through without dropping a set.

The Spaniard led 7-5, 7-5, 2-0 when Sebastian Baez opted to retire from the encounter because of a leg injury after two hours and 29 minutes of the contest.

Having made it to the quarterfinal last year, Alcaraz himself struggled for rhythm in this round one encounter and ended up with 47 unforced errors. He faced 10 break-points in the contest and was broken twice, something he would like to change as he moves along through the rounds.

Alcaraz came into the year’s final Grand Slam on the back of a 2-2 win-loss record at the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters. Would he be able to go deep this time too given his recent form struggles?

Coria Produces Huge Shock

As bookmaker odds go, the 25/4 for Coria’s win in the first round was probably the longest to have resulted in a victory. A clay-courter by nature, Coria had won just one Grand Slam match on non-clay courts in his career, and not surprisingly, he was an underdog against Tallon Griekspoor.

Instead, not just did Coria win the match but also did that in straight sets, registering a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hours and five minutes.

A late break in the first set gave Coria the lead, before he overcame a break in the fifth game of the second to go two sets to love up. With Griekspoor’s resilience broken, his serve was too as he crashed out in three.

Coria now faces a far greater challenge than he did in the opener but with nothing to lose, he might go out all guns blazing.

Alcaraz v Coria Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz might have struggled to get going in his opener but against Coria, there should not be any such worries and the Spaniard should come through easily.
