Popyrin Holds Off Tseng

Alexei Popyrin won his opening round match in straight sets, but by no means was it an easy victory as the Aussie needed two hours and 42 minutes to battle past Taipei’s Chun-Hsin
Tseng.

The 6’5″ Aussie struck 15 aces and 46 winners to beat the World no. 89 Tseng 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3). The world No. 84 Popyrin got the solitary break of the first set, but faced some stern resistance from Tseng, who is ranked five places below him.

Both players exchanged a break in the second set and traded two breaks each in the third, but Popyrin edged out the Taipei player in back-to-back tiebreaks to seal the contest and make it 3-0 in the opening rounds at the US Open. He had reached the third round in both his previous two appearances, and will be looking to reach the Round of 32 for a third time on  Thursday.

Th 23-year-old Popyrin has had a very difficult time at the top level this year and came into the contest with a 4-14 tour-level record. He however tasted some success at the lower level, winning a Challenger title and reaching two semifinals.
