Hubert Hurkacz had a fine start to his US Open campaign by beating Oscar Otte in straight sets. It’s a good result because the German can thrive in fast conditions like this but so can Hurkacz. Serving great, Hurkacz took control of the match early and kept the momentum going with 18 aces.
He was pretty good at avoiding any cheap errors and resorted to net play to switch up the rhythm at times. It worked and he cruised in straight sets to the next round. Hurkacz can be a dangerous player in New York, especially after some confidence-building wins leading up to it.
He grew up on North American hard courts so an 18-8 record on the surface this year is hardly a surprise. He never advanced past the second round of the US Open so the motivation is huge.
If he keeps serving as well as he did, he will certainly be in cards for the second week and anything beyond is only the icing on the cake.

Ivashka Overcomes Querrey
Ilya Ivashka needed over an hour to finally start playing the type of tennis he is capable of playing. Querrey gave him quite a bit of trouble with his serve and volley play taking the opening set and having a break up in the second set.
The Belarusian was able to pull out the 2nd set and then win the 3rd set break which was a close one and where Querrey was closer to winning initially. The final set was a continuation of the aforementioned comeback.
It was a solid win but also won that exposed Ivashka and his game. He will face a player that does everything Querrey did but only better and that might be problematic. The H2H certainly indicates that Hurkacz has a way of playing against Ivashka.
It’s been a while but it doesn’t seem like Ivashka will be getting to round three of the US Open as he did last year. Would be quite a shocker if he did.
Hurkacz v Ivashka Prediction and Tip
Hurkacz is the favourite in this one simply because the Polish player is the better player overall. He played more this year, he has 18 wins on hard courts alone as Ivashka has 18 wins on all surfaces this year.
The serve will be crucial and should do enough damage should the sets remain close.
