Marin Cilic took on Maximilian Marterer in round one of the US Open and it was an easy win for the Croatian. The US Open is one of his favourite events and the only grand slam he was able to win in the past.
Being back in New York is a delight for Cilic and he played that way in round one. A similar thing is expected in round two against Ramos whom he leads 7-3 in their H2H. He did not play too bad leading up to this event but got two tricky draws.
Paul was better in Montreal but that was his best event in recent memory. Alcaraz proved better in Cincinnati but both of those players are better hard court players than Ramos.
The Spaniard is not as good on fast surfaces like these which Cilic will look to exploit. A 26-15 record for the Croatian is very good and his level on grand slam events this year has been great as well. He looks set for a round three.

A Rare Win on Hard for Ramos
Albert Ramos is an okay player on hard courts, certainly better than the average Spaniard and that’s why his win over Gombos in round one was not that surprising. The Slovakian player mostly plays well indoors on hard courts and not outdoors.
Ramos has had a solid year so far with a 26-24 record. Most of those wins came on clay as his hard court record is 4-5. That’s pretty in line with his career and that’s why he will face issues against Cilic here. They played in Madrid earlier this year and Cilic won that match as well.
Ramos will try to stay in this match but unless Cilic completely bombs this matchup, it’s really hard to see any way he can win.
He just never grew comfortable with this kind of court speed.

The H2H speaks volumes in this matchup and in New York it’s Cilic all the way.
His game is perfect for these conditions and unless he completely falls apart, he should win.
