Former world number one Victoria Azarenka commenced her US Open 2022 campaign with a shaky three-set win over the 18-year-old American Ashlyn Krueger.
Vika needed a little under two hours to win the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 – boasting a 71% first-service win rate and committing just 27 unforced errors to Krueger’s 44.
As a three-time finalist here in New York, Azarenka has a rich pedigree spanning across two Grand Slam titles and more than 35 WTA career finals.
This season, however, has proven to be a slow one for the 33-year-old Belarusian. Her tally is now 18-10, with a couple of quarterfinal results across Adelaide and Washington DC, and a handful of mid-stage appearances in the Australian Open, French Open, WTA Rome, and Madrid Open marking her best results.
It is also worth noting that Azarenka has seen quite a few defeats from young stars on the tour this year.

Kostyuk Beats Sherif
Marta Kostyuk beat Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in her opening-round bout with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win.
The 20-year-old Ukrainian is looking to better her 2020 result in the tournament when she reached round three.
Now ranking World No. 65, Marta has had a better build-up to the US Open than Azarenka. Most recently, she made it to the semifinal in WTA Granby before withdrawing from her match with Daria Saville. Before that, she reached the round of 32 in Cincinnati as a qualifier.
Kostyuk is still on the hunt for her maiden WTA singles title and this year, the best she has done (apart from that Granby result) is reaching the mid-rounds in Eastbourne and the Australian Open.
Nonetheless, she has racked up a little over $600,000 in prize money in 2022 and improved her record for the season to 23-14.
Azarenka v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip
This match can swing either way. Azarenka, owing to her superior experience and trophy collection, will start as the odds-on favourite but Kostyuk has got all the precedents she needs to upset the Belarusian.
