Rafael Nadal v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
This has rivalry has seen a whopping 17 editions before this and Nadal has won 13 of them. On hard court surfaces, it’s 6-1 in favour of Nadal, with Fognini having won that sole encounter at the 2015 US Open.

The match lasted three hours and 12 minutes which Nadal finally won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 to carve out a place in round two.
Nadal will need a lot better than this to be called a serious contender at this competition.

Fognini Outlasts Karatsev in Thriller
Starting out as an 11/10 underdog in his opener against Aslan Karatsev, Fognini managed to pull off a fighting, five-set win over his Russian opponent to move to the second round of the US Open for the first time since 2018.
Fognini was two sets down before mounting a comeback that saw the Italian come through in three hours and 36 minutes to make it through to round two.
The difference between the two players turned out to be just that one break of serve; Fognini was broken six times in the match but retaliated with seven of his own.
What was interesting to note was both players dished out the same number of unforced errors – a whopping 61 of them apiece – and it was Fognini’s 30 winners that edged past Karatsev’s 25.
With Fognini’s erratic play on non-clay surfaces always been an issue, he would find it tough to get past Nadal here.

Despite his injury woes in recent times, his opening Cincinnati defeat and the trouble against Hijikata, Nadal starts off 1/20 to win this. No option but to back him for a straight-set victory.
