Preview:
Switzerland will be facing Russia for the fourth time but’s been 17 years since they last featured in a head to head. The winner of this tie will go on to make the finals of the Davis Cup that will be held over a week towards the end of the tennis season.
Switzerland won their first two ties against the Russians but the latter came back strongly to win their third encounter in 2002. This one had Roger Federer turning out for Switzerland and winning both his singles matches in straight matches but that did not stop Russia from winning the remaining three encounters.
On the surface of it, it should be an easy win for Russia. The combined ranking of the Russian side in the singles draw is a mere 27 while their opponents are fielding two inexperienced players, ranked 177th and 379th on the ATP Rankings.
Medvedev is also coming off a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open having taken a set off Novak Djokovic before going down in a gruelling match. He had beaten Ryan Harrison and David Goffin in earlier matches.
Khachanov made the round three at that first major before losing to Roberto Bautista-Agut, having finished his previous season with a title win at the Paris Masters.
And despite the fact that the Davis Cup is a different beast and personal rankings might not matter, this could be turn out to be a one-sided contest.
