World No. 31 Karen Khachanov had to play out four sets for the second straight round, before safely moving forward in the tournament.
The Russian, who had rallied from a set down to beat America’s Denis Kudla in the opening round, needed two hours and 58 minutes to see off Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the second round.
Khavchnov struck 17 aces and 45 winners on his way to a 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory. He got 61% of his first serve right during the match and won 82% of those points. He also visited the net 27 times, winning 21 of those points.
The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist didn’t face a single break point in the first two sets and saved all three in the fourth. He could have wrapped up the contest in the third after breaking in the ninth game and serving for the match at 5-4, but a determined Monteiro refused to lose in straight sets and made things interesting by winning three games in a row and taking the match into the fourth set.
The Russian improved his season record to 28-20 with the win. He had beaten Kudla 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
The 26-year-old has now matched his best U.S. Open showing, having reached the third round in 2018 and 2020. Can the two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist enter the Round of 16 in New York for the first time?

Draper Upsets Auger-Aliassime
Jack Draper has made heads turn with his impressive recent performances, and on Wednesday, he added more achievements to his fast growing CV—a second win over a top 10 player and a place in the third round of a major.
The World No. 53, who is making his U.S. Open debut this year, stunned the sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round on Wednesday.
The World no. 8, who was a semifinalist here last year, didn’t break even once in the two hour and 28 minute contest, as the 20-year-old saved all three break points that he faced in one game in the opening set. Draper made just 17 unforced errors to the Canadian’s 41 and converted 3 of 10 break points to win 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
The win follows Draper’s 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the opening round.
The Briton, who went from qualifiers to the quarterfinals at the Canadian Masters, defeating World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas en route, also made it to the last eight in Winston-Salem. He has carried the momentum into the U.S. Open and looks poised to go deep in the tournament.
