Wu’s Dream Run Continues
Wu Yibing, the first Chinese man to qualify for the U.S. Open in the Open era, made a dream start on Monday with a shock win over 31st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili. He kept his dream run going on Wednesday as he edged past fellow qualifier Nuno Borges in five.
Wu, who was joined by compatriot Zhang Zhizhen in the main draw, outlasted the Portuguese 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The three hour and 46 minute match saw the momentum shift from one end to the other. Wu struck 59 winners to Borges’ 32 but had 81 unforced errors in the match to the Portuguese’s 55.
Wu, who won the U.S. Open boy’s singles and doubles titles in 2017, had comprehensively beaten Basilashvili 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round. He wasn’t broken by the Georgian as he saved all six of the break points he faced. Against Borges, he converted 5 of 16 break points and saved 6 of 10.
Wu had beaten Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then rallied from a set down to dispatch Italy’s Stefano Travaglia 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the second qualifying round before powering past Corentin Moutet 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the final qualifying round.
Ranked No. 178, Wu will have little chance against the World No. 1 on Friday. But he can make an impact by putting up a solid show and giving Medvedev a run for his money.
