Davidovich Fokina Fends Off Fucsovics
After a four hour and eight minute marathon, 23-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina edged past Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics to reach the third round of the U.S. Open for the second time in his career.
The Spaniard, who had made it to the Round of 16 on debut in 2020, took the first set in the tiebreak. The Hungarian fought back in the second to tie the match and then took the third as well to take a two sets to one lead.
In both the second and third sets, Davidovich Fokina had broken in the very first game, but he couldn’t hold on to the advantage. Tables turned in the fourth set though as Davidvioch Fokina decimated the Hungarian 6-0 to tie the match once again.
The deciding set saw Fucsovics lift his game once again and both players held serve over 12 games to take the contest into the 10-point match tiebreak.
The Spaniard stamped his authority in the tiebreak to win outlast the Hungarian 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-3).
Davidovich Fokina, who improved his season record to 20-21, had beaten Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. That win had ended a three-match losing streak for the 23-year-old. Davidovich Fokina’s best this year was a runner-up finish in Monte Carlo. He is now one win away from matching his best at Flushing Meadows.

Galan Surging Ahead
Qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan, who stunned the fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening round, continued to march ahead after he won a heated second round contest against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday.
After winning the first set with a solitary break, Galan lost the next two to the Aussie, before rising again in the final two sets and sealing the three hour and 52 minute match 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
There were a few heated exchanges between the two players during the match, with Thompson also engaging in a war of words with Galan’s Colombian fans.
As far as stats go, both players won 153 points each in the match and broke each other six times during the course of the five set, but it was Galan who won the most important moments, to keep his stunning run going on his main draw debut at the U.S. Open.
The 26-year-old had scored the biggest win of his career two nights ago, beating the World no. 5 Tsitsipas 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
It was an improbable start for the Colombian who had come through the qualifiers, with straight set wins over Italy’s Luciano Darderi, Australia’s Max Purcell and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
Galan’s best Grand slam results, include a third round finish at Roland Garros in 2020 and a third round finish at Wimbledon this year. Can he better those at the U.S. Open this year?
Davidovich Fokina v Galan Prediction and Tip
They will be getting ready for another gruelling battle. The match is expected to go the distance and given how Galan’s been playing, he could once again beat a player ranked higher than him.
