Rafael Nadal v Richard Gasquet Head to Head
This a long standing rivalry that has seen 16 previous iterations at the highest level. And it’s also one of most one-sided rivalries in the history of men’s tennis with Nadal having won all of those 16 matches. Another win here for Nadal will make this a joint-most one-sided rivalry in the Open era.
Gasquet has won a couple of other times against Nadal, at a Challenger event in 2003 and at the Kooyong Exhibition match from 2018.

In what looked like a match going against the script, Nadal was in doldrums against Fabio Fognini in round two at Flushing Meadows. A freak injury in the late stages of the encounter also did not help matters but in the end, Nadal came through 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to make it to the third round.
Having also struggled through to a first round win, Nadal found himself in a hole when he dropped his serve twice in the first set but more importantly earned just one break-point in return.
Four successive service breaks brought the two players to 2-2 in the second set which was followed by Nadal dropping serve yet again, allowing Fognini a 4-2 lead.
From there on, however, things unravelled quickly for Fognini as Nadal won 16 of the next 19 games even as he hit his own nose with his racquet, to make it through.

Gasquet Surprises Kecmanovic
Since 2016, Gasquet had reached the third round at US Open just once. Which is why when he came up against the seeded Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round here, he was a whopping 21/10 underdog to surprise his opponent.
And that’s exactly what Gasquet did in four sets, overcoming his Serbian opponent 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the third. The match lasted nearly three hours.
Gasquet had earlier defeated Taro Daniel in the first round and is coming off a solid performance at Winston-Salem where he was a quarterfinalist following three successive wins.
