Musetti Rallies Past Brouwer
After surviving a dramatic five-setter against David Goffin in the first round, Lorenzo Musetti rallied from a set down to oust the Netherlands’ Gijs Brouwer in four and reach the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career.
The 20-year-old, who made it to the fourth round at the French Open last year, needed two-and-a-half hours to see off the Dutchman.
Both players held serve through the first set before Brouwer dominated the tiebreak to draw first blood. Musetti got an early break in the second and then stayed ahead to tie the match at 1-1. In the third, both exchanged an early break, before the Italian broke again late in the second to go 2-1 up.
It was all Musetti in the final set. He broke his opponent twice to seal the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
In the opening round, Musetti showed his ability to hold nerves in a nail biting finish. The Italian scored 173 points to Goffin’s 187, yet he won the moments that mattered the most to eliminate the Belgian 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9) in four hours and 36 minutes.
Musetti, who won his maiden ATP title this year by triumphing in Hamburg, improved his season record to 21-19 on Thursday. He has already bettered his second round finish at the U.S. Open, achieved last year. Now the focus would be to win the next round and match his previous best result at a Grand Slam.

Ivashka Upsets Eighth Seed Hurkacz
He fought back from a set down to battle past Sam Querrey in four sets in the opening round. Two days later, Ilya Ivashka won another match in four sets, this time causing a big upset, as the victory came over eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz.
The World no. 73 got the only break of the first set to seize advantage, but Hurkacz drew level with a solitary break in the second. Ivashka then won a competitive third set in a tiebreak.
In the fourth, the Belarusian broke early and then protected the lead till the end of the match for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory in three hours and five minutes.
Ivashka won 26 of 33 net points and saved seven of nine break points in the match.
In the first round, Ivashka had beaten Querrey 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.
Last year, Ivashka produced his best result at the U.S. Open by reaching the third round. This year he has matched that result. Can he go one better this year?
Musetti v Ivashka Prediction and Tip
Both have put up gutsy performances in the first two rounds and that’s a sign that this game may go beyond the third set. Musetti’s the higher-ranked player but Ivashka’s form makes him a slight favourite.
