Alcaraz Knocks Out Coria

Carlos Alcaraz marched into the third round of the U.S. Open with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Federico Coria on Thursday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard flew past the first two sets bit had to tough it out in the third seed before finally breaking the Argentine’s resistance to complete a 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 victory in two hours and 10 minutes.

The third seed, who struck 46 winners in the match, saved 13 of 14 break points. Alcaraz himself had 10 opportunities to break Coria and he succeeded on seven occasions.

A U.S. Open quarterfinalist on debut last year, the World No. 4 had a tough start to the tournament this year, as he laboured to claim the first two sets against another Argentine, Sebastian Baez. The latter eventually retired with a injury after just two games into the third set, but it took Alcaraz two hours and 30 minutes to win his opener 7-5, 7-5, 2-0 (ret).

He will feel a bit better about his performance in the second round, in which he won 38 of 49 net points. Although he was challenged in the third, with Coria cancelling out his early break advantage and then drawing level at 4-4. He didn’t lose focus and edged the third set.

Alcaraz is 46-9 this season and has already won four titles from six finals. He will be looking to keep the intensity going in the third round as he eyes another deep run in New York.

Brooksby Ends Coric’s Streak

America’s Jenson Brooksby ended Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric’s seven match unbeaten streak with a straight sets win in the second round on Thursday.

During a draining three-hour-and-eight-minute contest, Brooksby won the first set with a solitary break but had to save seven set points in the second set. He saved two of those when serving to stay in the contest at 5-6 and then saved five in the tiebreak. Interestingly Brooksby just held one set point in the entire set and he converted that to go two sets up.

In the third set, Brooksby saved seven of seven break points, three of them in the very first game. He also had seven break points and he converted two of them to seal a 6-4, 7-6 (12-10), 6-1 victory.

The win follows an impressive first round performance by the 21-year-old. He had raced to a 6-2, 6-0, 3-0 lead  against Dusan Lajovic in just an hour and 15 minutes when the Serb was forced to retire.

Ranked No. 43, the American is one win from matching his best Grand Slam performance, achieved at the U.S. Open last year.

Alcaraz v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz has been very consistent this year. He is in good touch and was able to lift his game in the second round after a difficult opening round. While Brooksby can be a tough competitor, Alcaraz is expected to win this contest, although he may need four or five sets to do so.
