Marin Cilic playing well in New York is not anything out of the ordinary as the Croatian is a former champion of this event. Many years ago he faced Kei Nishikori in the final and defeated him to win his only grand slam trophy to date.
He’s not on that level anymore but he’s enjoying a really strong season so far with some good performance in grand slams. 27-15 is the record overall with 15-9 on hard courts. The first two matches saw him dominate against both Maximilian Martered and Albert Ramos winning in straight sets.
Cilic has a heavy game consisting of powerful serves and good groundstrokes from both sides. He’s tall but moves very well. It’s just perfect for conditions like these so it makes him dangerous for any player here, especially Evans who likes to defend more than attack.
Their only clash was won by Evans and Cilic will be out for revenge.

Resilient Play by Evans
Dan Evans is a very interesting tennis player as he was a late bloomer in his career only hitting his potential fairly late. He’s been good ever since and the last couple of years were impressive, especially because he plays differently from the ultra-aggressive style we primarily see today.
Evans likes to keep the rallies long and defend forcing his opponents to make choices. If they make poor ones he ends up winning but if they play well and consistent he rarely finds a way to win. He’s a bit more aggressive on his serve with a bit of serve & volleying at times so you have to be focused against him either way.
It’s been a good year with a 25-19 record and 16-9 on hard courts. A quarter-final in Montreal was a good result but he lost in Cincinnati in round one. The US Open began with two solid wins so he’s back to playing okay tennis at the moment.
He did win his last match in Cilic but it’s been a long time since then.
Cilic v Evans Prediction and Tip
It’s an interesting one that will end up being on Cilic’s racquet. He can get frustrated at times and throw away matches which is what happened the last time they played in 2017.
Evans will hope Cilic has one of his bad matches because if the Croatian shows up, it’s going to be very tough. I’ll back Cilic but remember there is always a risk with him.
