World No. 14 Matteo Berrettini ended Andy Murray’s U.S. Open campaign with a four-set win over the 2012 champion in the third round on Friday.
The Italian began well, taking the first set with a solitary break.
In the second, both players exchanged an early break, before Berrettini broke again later in the set to take a two sets to love lead.
A determined Murray fought back in the third set, which was briefly suspended after a fan needed medical attention. Once the match resumed, Murray put up a brilliant show.
He didn’t hold a single break point in the set but he faced eight of them and saved each one of them. Murray was fired-up as he dominated the tiebreak to send the match into the fourth set.
Murray also began the fourth with a break, but Berrettini responded immediately to draw level and then finished off in style by winning the last three games for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 victory.
The 13th seed Italian, who was a semifinalist in 2019 and a quarterfinalist last year, is in the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year. Berrettini was flawless during a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Nicolas Jarry in the first round and then rallied from a set down to beat France’s Hugo Grenier 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7) in the second round.
The 26-year-old has improved his season record to 24-9. In addition to two titles and a runner-up finish, he was also a semifinalist at the Australian Open. Can he go that deep in New York?
Davidovich Fokina Halts Galan
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina put up a dazzling show in the third round to see off Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galán and reach the Round of 16 for the second time.
The Spaniard, who had made it to the fourth round in 2020, impressed with his strokeplay as he battled past the World No. 94, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 15 minutes.
It was a second straight round, when the world No. 39 had to fight off an opponent in a long match. Davidovich Fokina had beaten Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-3) in a four hour and eight minute second-round contest.
The 23-year-old had begun his campaign with a relatively easy 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.
Against Galan on Friday, Davidovich Fokina struck 41 winners to Galan’s 33 but also made 61 unforced errors against his opponent’s 36. The Spaniard won a total of 143 points, nine more than the Colombian.
The Spaniard now has a season record of 21-21 and will be hoping to reach a sixth quarterfinal of the year. He has gone past the last eight just once this year, reaching his maiden ATP final in Monte Carlo, only to finish runner-up.
