Ajla Tomljanovic v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece.
The first of these came at the WTA Moscow last year where Tomljanovic overcame her opponent in straight sets in the first round. More recently, in Washington, it was Samsonova who sent the Aussie packing to make it to the quarterfinals.

In what has been tipped to be Serena Williams’ final tennis tournament, Tomljanovic broke American and tennis fans’ hearts by crashing her opponent’s party in their third round match.
Tomljanovic, who had earlier eased past Karolina Muchova in the first round and needed three sets against Evgeniya Rodina in the second, was on court for more than three hours to carve out her win.
The Aussie clinched it 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in a match that saw a whopping 13 breaks of serves from the 26 chances both players got. Tomljanovic earned eight of those breaks including three in the final set by when Serena was left hanging by a thread.
The question now is whether Tomljanovic can maintain that kind of steam after what would have been a mentally draining encounter. Typically an unexpected result like is followed by a huge release of pressure and complacency could set in.

Samsonova Makes it 13-0
Samsonova had made a modest start to the season earlier this year with a quarterfinal appearance at Adelaide, a second round defeat at the Australian Open and a third rounder in Indian Wells to her name.
Little did anyone know what was in store for this second leg of hard court competitions where Samsonova has excelled and come away trumps 13 matches in a row.
Two title wins in Washington and Cleveland, and a shock victory over Leylah Fernandez here brought her face to face with Aliaksandra Krunic in her third round match.
And as was expected from Samsonova, having gone in 1/6 favourite to beat Krunic, she managed to get past her opponent 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes.
