World No. 5 Ons Jabeur arrived for the US Open with a bag of mixed results – a quarterfinal exit in San Jose was followed by an opening-round exit in Toronto and a round-three defeat in Cincinnati.
But all things considered, she has done well in reaching the fourth round and, in the process, posting her best results at the Flushing Meadows.
Her journey included straight-set wins over Madison Brengle and Elizabeth Mandlik, followed by a three-setter with Shelby Rogers. Jabeur prevailed against Rogers with 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 16 minutes – winning 75% of the points behind the first serve but committing 38 unforced errors.
Those mistakes may not be forgiven when the current Wimbledon finalist takes on Kudermetova next.
But keeping that aside, Ons has enjoyed a superb year with five career finals – a title run in Madrid and Berlin – and three runner-up feats in Charleston, Rome, and Wimbledon.
The 28-year-old Tunisian has improved her form significantly; perhaps, now is when she gets one up against Veronika.

Kudermetova Looking Sharp
Veronika Kudermetova never quite managed to move past the first round in her last three appearances in the US Open main draw.
This time around, she has made it to the R16 and looks primed to go further. The 25-year-old, now ranked World No. 18, is yet to drop a set in NY. So far, she has swatted away Donna Vekic, Maryna Zanevska, and Dalma Galfi with absolute ease.
The number 18 seed has enjoyed quite a season. She was the singles runner-up feats in Melbourne Summer Set, WTA Dubai, and Istanbul Cup.
On the doubles side of things, Kudermetova made it to five finals – winning the trophy in Dubai and Rome – and settling for the finalist silverware in Doha, Miami, and Den Bosch.
Her singles tally now stands at 32-16, armed with plenty of high-profile wins and matches.
Given that she holds a 3-0 lead over Jabeur, Veronika will fancy her chances to make it 4-0 – but don’t dismiss the Tunisian just so easily.
