Rafael Nadal handed old rival Richard Gasquet a straight sets shellacking on Saturday to march into the fourth round of the Australian Open.
The World No. 3, who had lost the opening set in the first two rounds before registering four-set victories, got off to a flying start against the Frenchman in the third round, winning the first nine games of the match. Gasquet finally held serve in the 10th game and raised his arms with a sense of relief as the crowds cheered him on. But his joy was short-lived as Nadal won the next three to go up by two sets.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion began the third by building a 2-0 lead before Gasquet finally enjoyed a brief spell of success during the match, winning three games in a row. Both players stayed on serve for a while, before Nadal surged ahead to close out the contest 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 and improve to 18-0 against Gasquet.
The two hour and 17 minute match saw Nadal convert 7 of 15 break points, hit 35 winners and make 23 unforced errors.
It was a clinical performance from the Spaniard following the come from behind wins over Rinky Hijikata and Fabio Fognini in the first two rounds. Nadal beat the former 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 and the latter 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.
Nadal is chasing his third major title of the year after he won the Australian and the French Opens. He also came close at Wimbledon but had to pull out before his semifinal match due to an injury.
The 36-year-old has improved his season record to 38-4 following Saturday’s win. A winner of four titles in 2022, Nadal is looking to win a fifth U.S. Open title this year. He is now 67-11 in the tournament and is on a 10-match winning streak at Flushing Meadows (He was a champion in 2019, but missed the next two years).
Tiafoe Takes Down Schwartzman
No. 22 seed Frances Tiafoe ousted 14th seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets to march into the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the third consecutive year.
Tiafoe saved five set points in the first set before winning it in the tiebreak. Both players exchanged two breaks each in the second set before Tiafoe edged ahead with a third break to take a two sets to love lead.
The third set too saw both players exchange a break in the middle of the set, before the American seized control with a second break and sealed the match 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-4.
The 24-year-old converted 8 of 18 break points and saved 4 of 10, he hit 45 winners and 34 unforced errors and won a total of 118 points during the three hour and two minute victory.
Tiafoe has not dropped a set this week. He ousted Marcos Giron 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and then defeated Australia’s Jason Kubler 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).
The World No. 26 is now a win away from a second major quarterfinal, having reached the last eight at the Australian Open in 2019. But he faces a massive challenge in the next round as he is yet to win a set against Nadal, who won both their previous meetings in straight sets.
Tiafoe brings a 24-18 season record into the match. One can expect him to give his all to improve that record further, but it will be a huge ask for him to upset the second seed.
