Swiatek Dispatches Davis with Disdain

Swiatek is slowly regaining the kind of confidence that had sent her into the orbit with the number of wins in a row this season and Lauren Davis was her third successive victim of that change.

Having sent Jasmine Paolini and Sloane Stephens packing in straight sets, Swiatek overcame Davis 6-3, 6-4 in the third round. She was on court for nearly two hours.

The Pole was quick off the blocks and broke Davis in her very first service game to take a 3-0 lead. And while she missed five other breaking opportunities, she had no issues holding her serve to take a set lead.

The second set was slightly tighter because it was Davis who drew first blood to go 3-0 up and at 4-1, she looked like she could turn things around against the world number one.

Instead, Swiatek ran away with the encounter from there on, winning five games in a row but more vitally, losing just four points in all in them.

While Swiatek might not have yet hit peak form, she is not surprisingly a huge favourite coming into one at 1/20 (with bet365) to make the quarterfinal.

Niemeier Makes it Three Upsets in a Row

For the third match in a row, Niemeier was a second favourite coming into the encounter and for the third time in a row she managed to overcome her opponent in straight sets.

The German, who has never been better than 94th in the world but had shown what she is capable of at Wimbledon this year when she reached the quarterfinal, got past Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the third round. This was despite having come into the encounter at 9/4 odds to cause an upset.

In essence it was a closely fought match which saw Niemeier edge ahead in the first set with a decisive break in the seventh game. This was after she had herself saved three break-points in the previous game.

The second set saw an early exchange of breaks and while Zheng did go 4-2 up, she dropped her serve again to be pushed into a tie-breaker.

Niemeier always kept her nose in front after being 0-1 down there and carved out a victory on her very first match-point.

Against Swiatek, Niemeier will hope to get a lot more than the 58% of her first serves that she got in during this encounter. She is 6/1 (with bet365) to cause an upset here.

Swiatek v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

While Swiatek is a favourite to win this in straight sets, we think Niemeier could put up a bit of a fight in one of those sets. Expect her to take it to 7-5 or a tie-breaker in all probability.
