Rafael Nadal v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Nadal has won both of them in straight sets. The first came at the 2019 Australian Open where he defeated Tiafoe in the quarterfinals before toying with him in the Madrid Masters that year again.

After having won 16 matches in a row against Richard Gasquet, there was very little doubt over Nadal’s supremacy over his French opponent and this third round match at Flushing Meadows was another point in case.
In fact it was the apt example of how difficult it is for Gasquet to play Nadal, with the Spaniard absolutely running away with the first two sets.
In the end, the Frenchman showed some fight in the third and even broke Nadal for a change but it was too little too late as the Spaniard clinched a 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 win in two hours and 17 minutes.
This would also be a bit of a relief for Nadal who was returning from an abdominal injury and had been stretched to four sets in each of his first two rounds – first by the virtually unknown Rinky Hijikata and then by Fabio Fognini who was a set and a break up.

Tiafoe Downs Schwartzman
For the first time since Wimbledon, Tiafoe registered his third successive win in a tournament and it came against the Argentine Diego Schwartzman.
What makes this win special and for that matter even gives him the confidence to consider a fight against Nadal come round four is the manner in which he defanged Schwartzman after a fighting first set.
Much like in the first two rounds, Tiafoe needed a first set tie-breaker but once that was out of the window, he came through 6-4, 6-4 in the next two. What Tiafoe will definitely need to mind is his serving which was broken six times in the encounter.
That he broke Schwartzman on eight occasions is appreciable but Nadal will not provide those many liberties. He is 6/1 with bet365 to win this.

With Nadal looking more and more like he has regained his full fitness, he is becoming a lot tougher opponent than he was at the start of the tournament. Tiafoe will do well to put up a fight given his early competition form but at best can be expected to take a set off the champion.
