World No. 4 Carlos Alcaraz is into the Round of 16 for the second straight year at the U.S. Open. Last year’s quarterfinalist knocked out local hope Jenson Brooksby in straight sets in the third round on Saturday to continue his charge in the tournament.
The 19-year-old Spaniard hit 46 winners to Brooksby’s 10 and converted 7 of 11 break points, while saving 1 of 4 during the two hour and 11 minute contest, which he won 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
The third seed improved his season record to 47-9 following Saturday’s win. He has already captured four titles this year and is looking to reach a third major quarterfinal.
Alcaraz, who made it to the last eight at the French Open earlier this year, has not dropped a set so far in this tournament. He was up 7-5, 7-5, -0 against Sebastian Baez in the opener when the Argentine was forced to retire. He then cruised into the third round with a 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 win over another Argentine Federico Coria in the Round of 64.
Alcaraz continued his dominance in the third round. He got the solitary break in the first set and then broke early in the second as well. However, Brooksby broke back a couple of games later only to see Alcaraz restore the break advantage immediately before going on to take a two sets lead.
The American had a solid start in the third set as he broke Alcaraz twice to take a 0-3 lead. But the Spaniard quickly took things back in his control and won six games in a row to advance to the Round of 16.
Cilic Battles Past Evans
2014 champion Marin Cilic moved into the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the seventh time in his career after the Croatian ousted Britain’s Dan Evans in four sets on Saturday.
In a match that lasted three hours and 59 minutes, Cilic failed to convert two set points at 6-5 in the first set and then saved three in the ensuing tiebreak before converting his seventh set point to draw first blood.
The second set too went into the tiebreak but it was dominated by Evans, who drew level.
The 15th seed took charge from that point on. He quickly wrapped up the third by breaking Evans twice and then edged out the 20th seed with a solitary break in the fourth to complete a 7-6 (13-11), 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-5 victory.
This was the first time in the tournament that the Croatian had dropped a set. He had won his opener against Maximilian Marterer, beating the German 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. He then out-aced Albert Ramos Vinolas 16-0 during a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 second round victory.
A semifinalist at the French Open this year, the World No. 17 has now reached the fourth round in all the three majors that he has featured in this season (he missed Wimbledon due to COVID).
The 33-year-old has improved to 28-15 following Saturday’s win. Can he improve that record and reach the quarters in New York? While he will count on his experience to deliver against the ever-rising teen, the fact that he has been outplayed by Alcaraz twice this season will give the 19-year-old the psychological edge.
