Sinner Rallies Past Nakashima

Jannik Sinner fought back from a set down to beat fellow 21-year-old Brandon Nakashima in a match that well beyond 1 a.m. on Sunday.

The 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory puts the Italian into the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the second consecutive year. It is also the first time that Sinner has reached at least the Round of 16 in all four majors in a calendar year. While he made it to quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, he lost in the last 16 stage at the French Open. Now he has a good chance of reaching a maiden quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows.

His journey this year began with a five-set win over Daniel Altmaier and then he picked a routine three-set victory against America’s Christopher Eubanks in the second round.

In the third round, Sinner struck 16 aces and 59 winners to Nakashima’s 3 aces and 27 winners. The World No. 13 also converted 6 of 19 break points and saved 6 of 8 on his way to eliminating the World no. 69 Nakashima.

Sinner has now improved to 41-11 this year. His best was a title success in Umag and has add several quarterfinal finishes. Can he reach a third Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season on Monday?

Ivashka Takes Down Another Seed in Four

Ilya Ivashka scored a third straight four-set win on Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career.

The 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lorenzo Musetti, put the 28-year-old Belarusian into Round of 16 for just the second time at a major, following his last 16 appearance in Wimbledon last year.

Ivashka converted 100% of the seven break points that he held and saved three of seven to knock out the 26th seed.

The Belarusian had also won the previous two matches in four sets. His first win came over Sam Querrey, as he rallied from a set down to beat the American 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.

In round two, Ivashka stunned the eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz, edging past the Pole 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The 28-year-old Belarusian has improved to 19-17 following the three wins in New York. He was recently a semifinalist in Atlanta, but failed to defend his title in Winston-Salem, going out in the Round fo 16. However, he is off to a great start at the U.S. Open and has already accounted for two seeded players and a former quarterfinalist.
