Ruud Holds Off Moutet’s Comeback Bid
Casper Ruud advanced to his second major quarterfinal with another solid display.
The 2022 French Open finalist had never gone past the third round in his previous four tries at the U.S. Open, but on Sunday, he held off a comeback bid from Corentin Moutet to edge out the Frenchman and progress into the last eight.
Ruud began the match well, breaking Moutet twice each in the first two sets and building a two-sets-to-love lead. However, the World No. 7 faced some stern resistance from the World no. 112 in the third set. Moutet came back from a break down to draw level at 4-4 and then edged the ensuing tiebreak to take the set in an hour and 15 minutes and send the match into a fourth set.
Ruud regrouped in the fourth set. Thrice Moutet had a chance to break the Norwegian in the fourth but Ruud was equal to his task. Ruud broke Moutet in the fourth game of the set and then agin in the last to complete a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 6-2 victory in three hours and 20 minutes.
Ruud had begun the tournament with an easy three set win over Kyle Edmund, but has had to dig deep over the next three rounds. He ousted Tim van Rijthoven in a two hour and 48 minute four-set contest in the second round and then battle past Tommy Paul in a five-set third round contest which lasted four hours and 23 minutes.
The 23-year-old is now 42-15 in a successful season where he has already won three titles from five finals. It’s also turning out to be a great year in term of Grand Slams for him. It will be interesting to see how far he can go from here.
Berrettini Outlasts Davidovich Fokina
Matteo Berrettini improved to 16-4 at the U.S. Open as the Italian reached the quarterfinals in New York for the third time in his fifth attempt.
The World No. 14 outlasted Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a high intensity fourth round contest on Sunday to reach the last eight of a major for the fifth consecutive time. He had missed out the French Open this year with an injury and didn’t participate in Wimbledon due to COVID, but had reached at least the quarterfinals of the four Grand Slam tournaments preceding this year’s clay court major.
Berrettini, who began his U.S. Open campaign with a straightforward win against Nicolás Jarry, held off a determined Hugo Grenier in four sets in the second round and then saw off Andy Murray in another four-setter in the third round.
On Sunday, he was stretched to five by the feisty and athletic Davidovich Fokina, however, the Italian stayed calm in the fifth set despite losing momentum in the fourth and completed a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory in three hours and 46 minutes.
Berrettini struck 18 aces and 49 winners and won 20 of 35 net points. When it comes to break points, he converted 6 of 10 and saved 9 of 13.
A semifinalist in New York in 2019, Berrettini is now looking to reach his second semifinal at the U.S. Open and also his second major semifinal of the year, after he made it to the final four at the Australian Open.
The 26-year-old is 259 this season, and despite being sidelined by injury for a while, he has won two titles from three finals. He lost to Ruud in the Gstaad final on clay, but he will be backing himself against the Norwegian on hard court and eyeing another final four spot.
