Nick Kyrgios v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Kyrgios Knocks Out the Defending Champion
Nick Kyrgios maintained his dominance over Daniil Medvedev as the Aussie knocked out the defending champion in a gruelling four-setter on Sunday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the first time in his ninth main draw appearance.
It’s a rivalry between two dynamic players that has the promise of becoming one of the biggest in the coming years. For now the Aussie has dominated it and after yet another enthralling edge-of-the-seat thriller on Sunday, Kyrgios now leads Medvedev 4-1.
The defeat not only ended Medvedev’s bid to defend his title, but also displaces him from the top of the ranking, with either Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alacaraz or Casper Ruud set to replace him on top next week.
Sunday’s dramatic two hours and 53 minutes contest was one of the highly anticipated matches of the U.S. Open this year and it lived up to its billing with both Kyrgios and Medvedev playing at a very high level. It was difficult to separate the two in the first set, which saw 24 points played in the tiebreak before Kyrgios emerged victories 13-11.
Medvedev levelled things up in the next set, before the Aussie surged ahead once again in the third and wrapped up the contest in the fourth for a 7-6 (13-11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Kyrgios was out-aced 22-21, but he struck 53 winners, four more than Medvedev. He also converted 5 of 7 break points and saved 5 of 8. When it comes to net points, the Aussie approached the net 47 times and won 29 of those points compared to just 10 net points won by Medvedev.
Kyrgios has been in sublime form recently. He finished runner-up at Wimbledon in what was his first Grand Slam final and then ended a three-year title drought by winning the Washington Open title. Ranked No. 25, Kyrgios has now improved his season record to 35-9 and he is 19-3 since the start of Wimbledon.
The 27-year-old began his U.S. Open campaign with a straight sets win over good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis and then needed four sets to dispatch France’s Benjamin Bonzi before cruising past American J.J. Wolf in round three. He is enjoying a purple patch and it won’t be a surprise if he keeps the winning momentum going in the tournament.

Khachanov Extends Dominance Over Carreno Busta
Meeting Kyrgios will be another first-time U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Karen Khachanov, who edged out Pablo Carreno Busta in an engaging five-setter on Sunday.
The 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory crafted over three hours and 20 minutes, improved Khachanov to 6-3 head-to-head against the Spaniard. And what’s more, Khachanov has now won four matches in a row against Carreno Busta.
Khachanov was very good on his serve and he allowed just two break points to the Spaniard in the five sets. In contrast the Russian held 15 break points in the contest and he converted five of them.
Khachanov won a total of 140 points, 19 more than Carreno Busta. He struck 11 aces and 43 winners to the Spaniard’s 9 aces and 53 winners, but also had 11 fewer unforced errors to Carreno Busta’s 43.
Khachanov, who improved his season record to 30-20 after the win, will be playing in an eighth quarterfinal of the season. A win on Tuesday will put him into a first major semifinal. He has featured in the last eight twice in Grand Slams but lost both of them.
The 27th seed began his U.S. Open challenge with a come-from-behind four-set win over Denis Kudla. He then toughed it out against Thiago Monteiro in a four-set second round victory. He is match against Jack Draper in the third round was also turning out to be an absorbing contest before the Briton was forced to retire with an injury in the third set.
A win in the quarters can propel the World No. 31 into the top 20 in the rankings, but coming up against the red-hot Kyrgios, Khachanov will have his task cut out.
