2022 has been a season of firsts for the 28-year-old Tunisian Ons Jabeur. So it is not surprising to see her add to that list by making it to her first quarterfinal at the Flushing Meadows – in her 10th attempt.
The current World No. 5 dispatched the in-form Russian Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(1), 6-4 in an hour and 35 minutes. The fifth seed was the dominant player in every regard. She dished out 11 aces, won 72% of the points behind the first service, and had an impressive 32 winners to her opponent’s 18.
Ons has been absolutely clinical throughout the week, as she previously defeated Madison Brengle, Elizabeth Mandlik, and Shelby Rogers.
With these four wins, Jabeur has improved her tally for the season to 42-13. It is spread across five WTA finals, including the historic Wimbledon runner-up feat and the finals in the WTA 1000 events in Rome and Madrid.
Jabeur has also made amends for her disappointing build-up to slam, as she fell early in San Jose, Toronto, and Cincinnati.

Tomljanovic Upsets Samsonova
Building on her emphatic third-round win over Serena Williams, Ajla Tomljanovic took things to the next level with her straight-set win over Liudmila Samsonova, ending in 7-6(8), 6-1.
It was an exciting battle of endurance – physical and mental – where Tomljanovic prevailed in two hours. Although she had only nine winners compared to Samsonova’s 24, she got through with a low unforced error count – 27 to her rival’s 56.
Ajla, currently ranked World No. 46, has reached her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal – and the first one in New York.
She had reached the same stage in the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to Petra Kvitova.
Compared to Jabeur, Tomljanovic’s season has not been that high profile or successful (32-20 as of this week), but she has had her moments. Moreover, she is well experienced – certainly enough to keep Ons a solid run for her money.
This match is going to be an exciting one. Jabeur has the advantage owing to her superior pedigree but anything can happen this late in the tournament.
