Carlos Alcaraz v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Three previous encounters between these two players have left Sinner leading 2-1 on head to head.

Alcaraz had won their first match at the 2021 Paris Masters before Sinner sent out the Spaniard at Wimbledon earlier this year. They met on the clay courts of Umag after that and Sinner won yet again to lift the title.

Alcaraz Needs Five Sets against Cilic

In a match that finished at nearly 2.30 am, Alcaraz needed five sets to get past the former champion Marin Cilic and book his quarterfinal spot at the US Open. This made it his second successive last-eight berth at this competition and also kept his dream of becoming the world number one alive.

Down a break in the fifth set, Alcaraz came back to complete a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in a match lasting nearly four hours.

What is interesting to see is how Alcaraz now responds to this new pressure of climbing up to the number one spot, having recently acknowledged that it was tough to play as a fourth-ranked player than it had otherwise been.

A couple of wins from here on could take Alcaraz him to the top spot even if he doesn’t win the title. Of course, standing in his way is Jannik Sinner, who was himself almost shown the door by surprise opponent Ilya Ivashka.

Alcaraz starts off a 8/11 (with bet365) favourite to win this.

Sinner in Similar Trouble as Alcaraz

In a plot that wasn’t too different from the Alcaraz-Cilic encounter, Sinner needed a decider and to rally back from a break down in the final set to overcome Ilya Ivashka.

Sinner was up a set and a break in the second set of what looked to be a routine win after starting out a 1/4 favourite but seven double-faults in the set allowed Ivashka to level things back.

He came back to win the third set and when he had broken back in the fourth to level things out, it seemed like it was going to be a matter of time before Sinner completed the win.

Instead, Ivashka put the Sinner serve under pressure, breaking it three times in a row to not just level the match but go 3-1 up in the final set. It was Sinner’s solid play that outshone his 55 unforced errors in the end to take him through to the next round.

No surprises he starts off 17/10 (with bet365) to surprise Alcaraz here.

Alcaraz v Sinner Prediction and Tip

While Sinner struggled with his serving in the fourth round he still managed to dig deep and came out on top. It was a rare off-day for Sinner and we can expect him to do a lot better than this.

While Alcaraz should still come through, we believe Sinner should win a set at the very least.
