Casper Ruud v Karen Khachanov Head to Head
Ruud won their only meeting in Rome in 2020, winning the match in three sets.

Ruud Eases Past Berrettini, Closing in on No. 1 Ranking
Fifth seed Casper Ruud dumped out No. 13 seed Matteo Berrettini in straight sets on Tuesday to reach a second Grand Slam semifinal.
The World no. 7, who was a finalist in Roland Garros this year, was off to a flying start in the quarterfinal against the Italian on Tuesday. Ruud didn’t face a break point in the opening set, while he broke Berrettini twice to take a one-set-to-love lead in no time.
The Norwegian continued to dominate in the second set, building a 5-1 lead with a double break. It was at this point when the Italian began making a comeback effort. He saved three set points and won three games in a row to make things interesting, but couldn’t stop Ruud from serving out the set in the 10th game.
Berrettini began the third set well, breaking early and building a 0-3 lead. Trailing 2-5, Rudd saved two set points on his serve to keep the set alive and then broke in the very next game to take away the Italian’s advantage. He then drew level in the next game. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which was dominated by Rudd, who clinched the two hour and 36 minute contest 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Ruud didn’t hit a single ace and struck just 20 winners to Berrettini’s 13 aces and 35 winners. However, all the other stats were in the Norwegian’s favour. He made 16 fewer unforced errors than Berrettini’s 39 and converted 5 of 14 break points in the match, while saving 7 of 9.
This was just the second time when Ruud scored a straight sets win in this tournament. He had beaten Kyle Edmund in three in the opening round but had needed at least four sets in the next three rounds. First it was Tim van Rijthoven in the Round of 64, when Ruud came back from a set down to win in four. He needed five set to see of Tommy Paul in the third round and then fought off Corentin Moutet in four in the Round of 16.
The 23-year-old has improved his season record to 43-15. It’s a season when he has already won three titles from five finals. He is now two wins away from his first major title and if he does get to it he will also become the World No. 1. He can also become the top ranked player if he reaches the final and Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t.

Khachanov Ends Kyrgios’ Run
World No. 31 Karen Khachanov stopped the dangerous Nick Kyrgios’ in a five-set quarterfinal on Tuesday to advance to a maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
The Russian converted half of the eight break points that he held and saved 7 of 9 during a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 victory.
The big-serving three-hour-and-39-minute contest saw Khachanov fire in 30 aces, one less than Kyrgios’ 31. The Russian also struck a total of 63 winners, which were again 12 fewer than the Aussie’s 75. But in all, Khachanov won the big moments and was also less error-prone, as he made just 31 unforced errors to Kyrgios’ 58.
This was a second straight five-set win for the Olympics silver medallist, who beat another in-form player in Pablo Carreno Busta in five in the Round of 16. That match lasted three hours and 21 minutes with Khachanov beating the 12th seed 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
The 27th seed began the tournament with tough four set wins over Denis Kudla and Thiago Monteiro in the first and second rounds respectively. He was one set apiece against Jack Draper and leading the third 6-5 with a break advantage when the Briton had to pull out of the third round contest.
Khachanov has improved his season record to 31-20. He was a finalist in Adelaide-1 and the four-time tour-level winner will hope to reach a second final of the year on Friday.
Against Ruud, Khachanov lost his only match on clay in 2020. What works in his favour in the semifinal is the fact that they are playing on hard courts, where Khachanov has a far superior record than Ruud.
But the Norwegian has shown that he can now be as dangerous on hard courts as he is on clay. Also, having featured in a Grand Slam final earlier this year, Ruud has the experience with him and may be equipped to deal with the pressure in a better way. So an entertaining semifinal awaits, but Ruud will have a slight edge over the Russian to move into the final.
