Iga Swiatek v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

Swiatek leads 3-1. Sabalenka won their first meeting at the WTA Finals last year, since then they have met thrice, all in 2022 and each of those matches has been won by the Polish player.

Swiatek defeated Sabalenka in the quarterfinals in Doha, the final in Stuttgart and the semifinal in Rome. And each of those three matches this year were one-sided affairs with Swiatek dominating and winning in straight sets.

Swiatek Battles Past Pegula

Iga Swiatek reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career as the World No. 1 knocked out American No. 1 Jessica Pegula in straight sets on Wednesday night.

The Polish player, who won the French Open titles in 2020 and this year, is chasing her third Grand Slam title. This is the first time that she has gone beyond the fourth round at Flushing Meadows. She lost at that stage last year. But this year has a different feel. It’s been a year when the 21-year-old has dominated the women’s game and a 55-7 record is a testament to that.

The season has also seen her claim six titles and they were won back-to-back in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland Garros. Swiatek saw her form dip following the French Open victory as she failed to reach the semifinal stage in the next four tournaments, but she has found her mojo back at Flushing Meadows.

On Wednesday, Swiatek edged out Pegula 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 53 minutes. In a match that saw a combined 13 breaks of serve, Pegula was the first to break in the first set to go ahead 2-3, but the Pole bounced back, winning four consecutive games and taking a one-set lead.

In the second, both players broke each other five times each. It was Swiatek who failed to serve out the match at 5-4 and 6-5, but eventually edged the tiebreak to advance.

This was Swiatek’s fourth straight sets win in the tournament. The only time she need three sets was against Jule Niemeier in the Round of 16. The German had won the first set, before Swiatek rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.

The nine-time tour-level champion had begun the tournament with straight sets drubbing of Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and Americans Sloane Stephens and Lauren Davis in the first three rounds respectively.

Following her quarterfinal win over the World No. 8, Swiatek has now won eight consecutive matches against players ranked in the top 10 and all those wins have come in straight sets. Can she keep that streak going in the semifinals.

Swiatek starts off 1/2 with bet365 favourite to win this.

Sabalenka Crushes Pliskova

Sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka put up a huge performance on Wednesday to oust Karolina Pliskova and march into the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

It’s been an up-and-down year for the 24-year-old Belarusian, who was 24-17 in 2022 before the start of the final Grand Slam. However, she has been rewarded for her consistency in New York and now she will be hoping to deliver her best-ever result in a major by reaching a maiden final. Apart from reaching two semifinals at the U.S. Open, Sabalenka also made it to the final four at Wimbledon last year but hasn’t been able to go past that stage.

The World No. 6 will back herself to give Swiatek a run for her money in the semifinal, particularly after the way she won her quarterfinal against Pliskova. Sabalenka didn’t face a single break point against the Czech player and converted 3 of 7. All those three breaks came in the first set. Both players held serve in the second before the Belarusian took the set in the tiebreak and sealed the one-hour-and-22-minute contest 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

This was just her third straight sets win in the tournament. She began with an easy straight sets win over American Catherine Harrison, but survived a scare in the second round as she fended off two match points and rallied from a set down to beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. The tough win was followed by another straight sets victory over Clara Burel in the third round and then in the Round 16 she had to rebound from a set down for the second time in the tournament, this time to oust America’s Danielle Collins.

So Sabalenka has found herself in different situations in the tournament and has remarkably found a way to keep charging ahead.

Last year, Sabalenka was knocked out by Leylah Fernandez at this stage, can she go past the semis this year, as she starts off 5/3 (with bet365) to win this.

Swiatek v Sabalenka Prediction and Tip

Consistency has been a hallmark of Swiatek’s game this year and she is likely to reach another final with a win on Thursday. She has beaten Sabalenka thrice this year, all in straight sets, and that gives her a massive psychological edge going into this contest.

Sabalenka would, however, like to think that the semifinal at the U.S. Open is a new game and a different challenge, and she can turn the tables on the World No. 1. But that would require a massive effort from the World No. 6.

Sabalenka may take a set, but Swiatek is likely to advance.
