Wang Has Played Well on Hard Courts This Year
Wang Qiang was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open in 2019, but she couldn’t make it past the second qualifier this year having returned to New York for the first time since her only last eight finish at a Grand Slam.
Her next mission is the Chennai Open, where the World No. 102 is the sixth seed. She brings an overall season record of 31-18 into the tournament.
The Chinese player is at her best on hard courts and has also played most of her matches on the surface than on other surfaces.
The 30-year-old is 21-10 on hard courts, across levels, this year. Her best performances this season were semifinal finishes in Guadalajara and Prague, and she also made it to the quarterfinals in Monterrey.
Wang was also a semifinalist in the WTA 125 in Concord, USA last month. The Chinese player is a two-time tour-level winner and also a three-time runner-up on the tour. She will be hoping to start well in Chennai.

Wickmayer Hoping to Better WTA Record for 2022
Former World No. 12 Yanina Wickmayer has seen a constant slide over the last couple of years and the Belgian heads to Chennai with a 18-12 season record across levels.
The 32-year-old is currently ranked No. 527th in the world and she was at her best at Wimbledon, where she won all her three qualifiers and then even knocked out her first round opponent before falling in the second round.
A US Open semifinalist in 2009, Wickmayer has won 5 titles at the tour-level from 11 finals. But the Belgian hasn’t reached a final since winning the Washington Open in 2016.
At the ITF level, she has won 11 titles from 20 finals. Most recently she reached a final in Netanya, Israel this year. It was her first final since 2019, but Wickmayer finished runner-up to Priscilla Hon.
She has a 12-8 record on hard court this season. It’s been the most productive surface for her throughout her career and she will be hoping to put up a fight in Chennai.
Wang v Wickmayer Prediction and Tip
Wang has displayed better form at the top level this year and she has done pretty well at the WTA 250 and WTA125 level tournaments. Expect her to deliver again in Chennai. She should start off with a straight sets win on Monday.
