Jana Fett v Nao Hibino Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Vancouver five years ago, Fett winning in three sets.

Fett Given Fright in Qualifying

Fett’s senior career has never quite fulfilled the potential she showed as a junior, when she was runner-up in the girls’ singles at the Australian Open in 2014.

Since then, all her successes have come on the ITF tour where she has won five titles, and appeared in four more finals, the most recent of which was in April in Nottingham.

Her last appearance on the senior was when she came through qualifying at Wimbledon, only to have the misfortune to meet the world number one Iga Świątek in the first round there.

One of those players who skipped the US Open altogether this year, she was forced to enter the qualifying competition in Chennai.

She easily beat Kaylah McPhee of Australia, but was given a much stiffer test by Peangtarn Plipuech, a woman ranked more than 200 places lower than her, and it took three sets to overcome the Thai.

Hibino’s Last Title Win was in 2019

Hibino has won two senior WTA titles, and appeared in three more finals, but the fact that her most recent triumph was four years ago, when she beat compatriot Misaki Doi to win their home event of the Japan Open, shows what has happened to her form since.

Once ranked as high as 56 in the world, she is now struggling to keep her foothold in the top 200.

However, if she wants to take recent inspiration, then the Prague Open in July offers some hope, as she came through qualifying there to make the last eight, before she had to retire with an injury.

She lost at the final stage of qualifying for the US Open but breezed through to the main draw in Chennai, dropping just three games in the course of two matches against Sai Samhita Chamarthi of India, and Daniela Vismane of Latvia.

Fett v Hibino Prediction and Tip

Both these qualifiers have fallen on relatively hard times of late, having previously been ranked much higher in the past. However, if the way that they dealt with the challenges of the qualifying competition in Chennai is any guide, then Hibino seems in the better form right now.

Tip: Hibino to win: 7/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
