Podoroska Downs Okamura

Nadia Podoroska opted out of most of the tournaments in the first half as she recovered from injury, but ever since the Argentine returned to court in June she has shown decent form, particularly in the lower level tournaments.

Although she had won just one match from four tour-level tournaments in the lead-up to the Chennai Open, she finished runner-up at an ITF event and reached two other semifinals at that level.

On Tuesday, Podoroska won her second tour-level match of the season, defeating Japan’s Kyōka Okamura in straight sets at the Chennai Open.

The 25-year-old Argentine, currently ranked 298th in the world, had got an early break in the first set, but Okamura drew level soon. However, Podoroska sealed the set with a second break. The 2020 French Open semifinalist got the solitary break of the second set to win the contest 6-4, 6-3.

It will be interesting to see if she can keep her winning run going in the second round.
