Paolini Survives Juvan Test

Defending champion Jasmine Paolini avoided elimination, as she bounced back after losing the first set to down Kaja Juvan in a dramatic three-set contest.

The Slovenian stayed in the match till the very end, but it was Paolini who edged past the local hope in the final set tiebreak to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 22 minutes. Paolini, who was broken five times in the match, converted 6 of 9 break points.

The World No. 55 had beaten Croatia’s Tara Wurth 7-5, 6-1 in the first round.

Following the two victories, Paolini has improved her season record to 19-20. The Italian had reached back-to-back semifinals in Palermo and Warsaw and will be hoping to reach her third tour-level semifinal of the season on Friday.

Last year, Paolini had beaten Alison Riske for her first tour-level title.

Siniakova Brushes Aside Burrage

World No. 82 Katerina Siniakova reached just her second tour-level quarterfinal of the year by beating Jodie Anna Burrage of Britain in the second round on Thursday.

Siniakova broke early in the first set, but Burrage broke twice to take a 3-5 lead in the set. The Briton couldn’t close out the set as the Czech fought back by winning the last four games of the set and taking a one-set-to-love lead.

With the first set in the bag, Siniakova raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Burrage finally held a service game. But the Czech won two more games in a row to close out the match7-5, 6-1.

Siniakova had also won her opening round match in straight sets, beating Martina Trevisan 6-1, 6-4.

While it has been a brilliant year for Siniakova as a doubles player, who won three Grand Slam titles with Barbora Krejcikova, and five in all to reach the World No. 1 ranking, she has struggled in the singles game.

She is 20-18 overall from all levels but 12-17 from tour level matches. Can she reach her first tour-level semifinal since Bad Homburg last year, where she finished runner-up?

Paolini v Siniakova Prediction and Tip

Paolini is the defending champion and has also performed better than Siniakova in singles this year. She will be expected to edge out the Czech player in the quarterfinal.
