Fruhvirtova Into Her First Semifinal
Linda Fruhvirtova’s amazing run at the Chennai Open continued as the 17-year-old reached her first tour-level semifinal with a straight sets win over second seed Varvara Gracheva on Friday.
The Czech player bounced back from a break down twice in the first set before breaking for a third time in the ninth game and claiming the opening set. In the second set, the World No. 80 Gracheva raced to a 0-3 lead but Fruhvirtova made a solid comeback, winning six games in a row and sealing the one hour and 32 minute contest 6-4, 6-3.
Fruhvirtova, who improved her season record to 28-18, had rallied from a set down to beat Liang En-shuo in the opening round and had knocked out fifth seed Rebecca Peterson in straight sets in the Round of 16.
It has been a very good year for the World No. 130, who reached the fourth round of the Miami Open on her WTA 1000 debut and also made her Grand Slam debut at the U.S. Open, reaching the second round of the tournament.
The three-time ITF champion now has a great chance of reaching her first career final. Can she pull off another win on Saturday?

Podoroska Fights Back Once Again
For the second consecutive round, Nadia Podoroska lost the first set, but the Argentine bounced back to keep her chances of winning a first WTA title alive.
The Argentine has not played much this year having missed the early part of the season due to an injury. She returned in June and since then had one runner-up finish at the ITF level in addition to two semifinal finishes. On the tour she was 1-3 before the Chennai Open, but a lot seems to have changed in India.
Podoroska ousted Japan’s Kyōka Okamura in straight sets in the opening round and then rallied past fourth seed Tatjana Maria in three sets.
On Friday, the World No. 298 was outplayed by Eugenie Bouchard in the first set, after being broken thrice by the Canadian.
She started the second set well though, building a 4-1 lead after breaking Bouchard twice. The latter did get a break back, but Podoroska didn’t allow another break as she tied the match at one-set all.
In the final set, Podoroska dominated from the start, breaking her opponent twice and building a 3-0 lead. Bouchard did get a break back, but the Argentine immediately restored a two-break advantage and then raced to the finish line for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in two hours and 24 minutes.
The 25-year-old is into the semifinals for the first time since featuring in the final four of the French Open in 2020. Can she reach her maiden WTA final with a win on Saturday?
