Kenin Bounced off in US Open Opener

Life back on court hasn’t been easy for the former world number four, Kenin, who has featured in 15 matches and won just four of them.

Two of those victories came at the Cleveland Open in the lead-up to the US Open but once she was sent packing by Bernarda Pera in the quarterfinal, Kenin fell to her old losing ways again. She was sent packing by Jule Niemeier in the first round of the season’s final Grand Slam.

Before that Cleveland run too, Kenin had a hopeless streak of poor form – she went nine matches without winning after having won a couple of rounds at the Adelaide International.

The mitigating factor here is that while Kenin’s woeful form was a part of the reason, the other bit was she was drawn against some of the better players in the world early in the competition.

Here, she is starting off against a player who has never been ranked better than 157th in the world.

Gómez Makes it Through the Qualifiers

As mentioned earlier, Gomez has never broken into the top 150 on the WTA Rankings but it must be quickly added the 24-year-old has shown a bit of sparkle this season.

For starters, she has featured in the qualifiers of WTA tournaments more regularly in 2022 than she had in the past seasons.

More vitally, the Mexican has managed to break into the main draw of some of these events, including at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Making it better for Gomez is her maiden Grand Slam victory which came at Roland-Garros where she got the better of Panna Udvardy in her opener before falling to Daria Kasatkina.

Gomez has some way to go before she can start challenging top-level players but against an off-colour Kenin, she might fancy her chances to push her opponent.

Kenin v Gómez Prediction and Tip

Kenin should feel confident enough to record a win here but we could be looking at Gomez to steal a set off of her opponent here.
