Marcos Giron v Tomas Etcheverry Head to Head

Marcos Giron had a pretty solid year in 2021 but this year hasn’t been that good. Giron has a negative record of 17-26 and he’s only 8-12 on hard courts. Despite not playing as well as last year, Giron did look solid in the recent weeks. His best event was the Cincinnati Masters where he won three matches including two in the qualifiers.
The wins were over solid players so perhaps it signalled a start of better form for him. Frances Tiafoe proved much better at the US Open beating him in the first round. This will be the first time he plays since then as he had a BYE in the first round.
It might have been better for him to play the first round to shake off the rust but his opponent is not one that does very well on hard courts. That’s a solid chance for him although I do expect him to struggle a bit. Being their first matchup also suits Etcheverry more than Giron.

Etcheverry Wins Against Mena
Tomas Etcheverry will try to bring his tremendous clay level to hard courts and it’s something he was unable to do so in the past. He is an excellent 43-26 this year but the vast majority of those wins came on clay courts with his hard record being 4-4.
Not terrible but not spectacular either. He started off his San Diego campaign with a win over Facundo Mena, another clay player who isn’t a better player than Etcheverry so the victory was hardly a surprise. He does have a very good serve and is quite tall which could play in his favour.
The movement might be an issue because Giron moves really well and has a lot of tricks in his bag. He doesn’t have strong groundstrokes so maybe Etcheverry can win that battle.
I do think he’ll be solid but I don’t see him really winning it.
Giron v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip
So this will be their first meeting and I do think Giron should have an edge. He is the favourite in this one and it’s mostly due to him being at home and being a better hard-court player.
I don’t see it ending in two sets but a solid 3-set victory for Giron seems likely.
