Caroline Garcia v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

It is 2-2 between the two players. They met twice this year and got a win each. Zhang won the Lyon Open semifinal while Garcia avenged that loss in Wimbledon third round in straight-set tiebreaks.

Zhang Off to a Solid Start

World No. 28 Shuai Zhang is off to a blazing start in the 2022 Toray Pan Pacific Open as she beat Mai Hontama 6-0, 6-3, winning 74% of the points behind the first serve.

It has been an interesting season for the 33-year-old Chinese, who is now 32-23 as of Tuesday. She has two singles finals to her name – the title from Lyon and the runner-up feat in Birmingham. On the doubles circuit, she was most recently the runner-up in Wimbledon and Birmingham.

Zhang also had a decent run in the US Open swing, reaching the quarterfinal in Cincinnati and Cleveland and round four in the US Open. Over these tournaments, she dismissed a few big names like Anett Kontaveit, Naomi Osaka, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Jil Teichmann.

Although Shuai’s singles form hasn’t been half as scintillating as Garcia’s, her rich experience has certainly positioned her well to put up a fight.

Garcia, Hoping to Retain the Momentum

Caroline Garcia, newly crowned World No. 10, has arrived in Tokyo on the back of a superb run in North America.

She is now 40-16 and well on course to deliver her career-best season since 2017, when she ended the year at the #8 spot.

Most recently, she was the semifinalist in the US Open and the winner in Cincinnati, where she dispatched a handful of big names like Cori Gauff, Bianca Andreescu, Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, and Jessica Pegula.

Caro also delivered similar results on other surfaces, winning the Bad Homburg Open (grass) and Poland Open (clay). With this kind of momentum, Garcia is certainly among the favourites on paper to go the distance in Tokyo.

Garcia v Zhang Prediction and Tip

While Badosa is 9/20 to win this, one cannot help but think that Zheng will put up a strong showing and might even cause an upset. Backing the Chinese player to carve out a shock victory.
