Daniil Medvedev v Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka won three matches this week in Metz to get to round two and face Daniil Medvedev. It can hardly be considered a reward for his efforts but it will serve him as a very good test against one of the best in the game. He admitted recently that he knows his career is coming to a close but perhaps he can prove to himself that he’s still capable of one more strong push.
The Russian will be playing his first event and match since losing to Nick Kyrgios. He was in high spirits ahead of the event admitting that losing the number one ranking did not bother him. He also reiterated that he loves this part of the season and with a 13-3 record indoors last year, we agree.
He didn’t play a single one this year though and some rust will be expected. Wawrinka has served really well this week so he is going to keep this one close and he might even fancy winning a set I don’t think that will happen though he will challenge the Russian in a proper manner.
I’ll take Medvedev to win but Wawrinka to push him.
Tip: Medvedev to win, AND and Over 20.5 games: 2/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Hubert Hurkacz v Dominic Thiem
Defending champion Hurkacz is back in Metz to try and lift the trophy once more. Standing in front of him is Dominic Thiem, a man who has played a couple of solid matches indoors this year already having played at the Rennes challenger last week.
He’s a pretty strong indoor player and always was but Hurkacz has been superb on the surface as well. The Polish player obviously had a much better year so far as he wasn’t as injured as Thiem and he’s widely expected to cruise in this one.
However, the odds tell us that it might be closer than we think and I agree. Thiem has been serving really well and any time you have a player in great serving rhythm, he’s a threat indoors. You can get to a tiebreak and once odd point could determine who wins it.
Still, I trust the big-serving Polish player to get it done in two.
Tip: Hurkacz to win in straight sets: 3/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Emil Ruusuvuori vs Alexander Bublik
A very fascinating matchup is going to happen between two very strong servers. It’s hard to pinpoint who actually has a better serve because Ruusuvuori has the more consistent one but Bublik has more power. If he wasn’t keen on hitting aces on his second serve, he’d win this battle.
The proper battle on the court so far has been won by the Finnish player as he won both previous encounters. One of them was actually this year but it was on clay and everybody knows how much Bublik hates clay. He’s been in pretty great form in the Davis Cup with some solid wins but he nearly lost in the previous round.
A stellar comeback in the final set saved him so Ruusuvuori will have a chance here, a pretty big one. He’s actually favoured so that tells you all you need to know. Bublik’s best easily wins this match but will he bring his best? That’s a very hard question and you’d be better off guessing the lotto numbers.
I think it will be competitive and close with big serves dominating so take the over.
Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
