Still, Ruud will take a lot out of that showing, having also become the number two player in the world following the kind of year he has had. Already armed with three titles, Ruud’s biggest achievement has been to break out of the clay court mould.
Sure, he still prefers the red dirt but having reached the semifinal of the Montreal Masters and the the final at the US Open, Ruud looks like he has found another gear to his game outside of clay.
This will be his second appearance in the Laver Cup, having featured last year and defeated Reilly Opelka. He should start off with a lot of confidence against a player ranked 128th in the world.

Sock Hoping to Put up a Fight
He is a former top-10 player but Sock’s current performances on the singles circuit aren’t too much to write home about. It’s in doubles play that Sock is slowly finding his feet and his later partnership with Frances Tiafoe when they take on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will something to watch out.
Does that mean Sock will be a virtual pushover in singles? We would like to believe otherwise for the simple reason he has shown to be a fighter.
Having played in three singles matches in this tournament, Sock is 1-2 on win-loss but the two matches he did lose – to Kyle Edmund and Nadal – were both in the third set match-tiebreaker. And he did defeat Fabio Fognini last year.
Against a player as methodical as Ruud, it might not be easy but it wouldn’t from lack of trying.
