Marcos Giron v James Duckworth Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 29 year old American, and the Australian, one year older.

Giron Beats Argentine Clay Court Player

Giron is now within one match of reaching his second semi-final of the year, more than seven months after his first in Dallas.

The recipient of a first round bye, he was given a favourable second round draw against the Argentine, Tomas Martin Etrcheverry, the world number 89, and a man more at home on a clay court.

Giron achieved an early break in the first set, and, appeared to be in cruise control when he served for it. Etcheverry then surprised him by breaking back, but his satisfaction was short lived, because Giron broke once more next game to take the set.

Three of the first four games of the second set went against serve, but, by the end of that sequence, the American was a break up. From there he just had to keep his nerve and concentration to close out the match.

Duckworth Progresses After Two Contrasting Matches

It has been almost a year exactly since Duckworth reached his first ATP final, finishing runner-up at the Astana Open in Kazakhstan.

He has not had a moment like that so far in 2022, although, earlier this month, he was the beaten finalist in a Challenger event in France.

However, he has made his way to the last eight in San Diego after two contrasting matches.

The first was against a man he knows well, Alexei Popyrin, and, for two sets, it was a closely fought contest, until Duckworth got took control in the third, and ran away with it.

And then he faced the qualifier, Mitchell Krueger currently ranked 228th in the world, in the second round.

Duckworth achieved the only break of the first set, although he made hard work of closing out the set, needing four set points before he finally got the job done.

The pair then swapped breaks early in the second set, but, with nothing further to separate them, it went to a tie-break.

Krueger began that strongly, took an early three point lead, but could not hold on to his advantage, as Duckworth used all his experience to get on top. And, when he was presented with a match point, he needed no second opportunity.

Giron v Duckworth Prediction and Tip

Giron will already have half an eye on the semi-finals in San Diego, and provided that he can guard against complacency against Duckworth, should beat the Australian with comparative ease.

Tip: Giron to win: 6/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
