Wawrinka Upsets Medvedev
Stan Wawrinka stunned top seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Moselle Open to reach his first quarterfinal since making it to the last eight in Melbourne 2 in 2021.
Wawrinka, who had won just three matches this season, before the start of this tournament, has now won four matches in a row. The Swiss ousted Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros in the qualifiers and then defeated Joao Sousa in straight sets in the opening round.
The 37-year-old came close to winning a second straight main draw match in straight sets on Thursday, but he squandered a match point in the second set tiebreak. Medvedev eventually took the tiebreak and forced the deciding set, but didn’t start well with Wawrinka building a 3-0 lead thanks to an early break.
The former no. 1 fought back by winning the next three games, but Wawrinka broke for a second time in the eighth game and then closed out the match for a sensational 6-4, 6-7 (-79), 6-3 victory.
This was Wawrinka’s first top 10 win since beating Andrey Rublev in the Paris Masters in 2020. If he wins on Friday he will be playing his first semifinal since featuring in the final four in Doha two years ago.

Ymer Breezes Past Barrère
Facing Wawrinka will be World No. 100 Mikael Ymer who handed a straight sets drubbing to France’s Grégoire Barrère in the second round on Thursday.
The 24-year-old Swede didn’t face a single break point in the match while he converted 3 of 11 for a 6-4, 6-3 victory in an hour and 21 minutes. Ymer got 80% of his first serves right and won 77% of those points to reach the fourth quarterfinal of the season.
He had lost in the last eight in Adelaide, but was a semifinalist in Montpellier and Washington.
Ymer has not dropped a set so far in the tournament as he had beaten another Frenchman and eighth seed Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-0 in the opening round.
He is 21-20 this season and will look to keep the momentum going in the last eight clash.
Wawrinka v Ymer Prediction and Tip
With the sort of form Wawrinka is in at the moment he will be difficult to stop in the quarterfinal. Ymer may take a set but the Swiss should go through.
