It wasn’t expected to get so tough for Ruud when he took on Jack Sock in his first singles match on day one but he would just be relieved he managed to get Team Europe a crucial point.
The Norwegian player, who made it up to the second spot on the world rankings with a finals appearance in the final of the US Open, registered a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win over Sock in a match lasting an hour and 49 minutes.
Ruud was up an early break and while he failed to serve it out at 5-3 in the first set, he managed to break his opponent right back to clinch the opening set. Sock retaliated with a late break in the second, but more importantly, Ruud was unable to get past his lower-ranked opponent’s serve throughout.
In the deciding match tie-breaker, the two players went toe to toe till 3-3 before Ruud took over and ran away with the encounter. He now faces a higher-pedigreed Fritz.

Fritz Edges Out Norrie
Fritz saved the day for Team World when he carved out a hard-fought win over Cameron Norrie on day two of the competition, the only victory for his team on the day.
The American won 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 in a match that could have gone either ways till the very end; what with Fritz never fully in control of the match tie-breaker but having his nose just in front throughout that third set.
In fact, it took successive unforced errors from Norrie at 8-8 in that match tie-breaker to put the encounter in Fritz’s favour.
Fritz had come into the match with two defeats from three matches in the Davis Cup, which included a loss to Norrie but managed to avenge that loss. Can he now keep the Team World in reckoning and push this year’s Laver Cup into the last match?
Ruud v Fritz Prediction and Tip
This is an interesting match-up given Ruud has recently shown what he’s capable of on hard courts too but Fritz having done well on this surface overall. Ruud’s lack of experience indoors might play against him and if this match does get played, we are looking at a Fritz win.
