Huesler Topples the Second Seed

Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler caused a huge upset in the second round on Thursday, knocking out the second seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a one hour and 43 minutes contest.

Huesler, who came into the tournament with a 5-8 season record on the tour, has now improved to 7-8 and will be looking to improve that record even further over the next three days.

The World No. 95 got the solitary break in the first set to draw first blood. But the Spaniard fought back in the second by getting the only break of the set in the eighth game and tying the match at one-set apiece.

In the final set, Huesler missed four break point chances in the second game, but he made amend in the sixth game, breaking Carreno Busta to love and then broke again in the final game to register a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory.

The Swiss had not been broken in the opening round as he eased past French qualifier Geoffrey Blancaneaux 6-4, 6-4.

A two-time Challenger champion this year, Huesler will be aiming to reach a second tour-level semifinal of the season having also reached the last four in Winston Salem last month.

Majchrzak Rallies Past Otte

Kamil Majchrzak rebounded after losing the first set to beat Germany’s Oscar Otte and reach his third tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

The 26-year-old Pole was a semifinalist in Pune and a quarterfinalist in Geneva earlier this year.

Ranked no. 119 Majchrzak had beaten Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round. The Pole kept the momentum going on Thursday.

He had a slow start, losing the first set to the World no. 55, but he bounced back well in the next set, outplaying the German with two breaks of serve. In the third set, both players held serve over the first nine games, but it was Majchrzak who broke in the 10th to claim the one hour and 58 minute contest 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
