Sinner Breezes Past Borges

2020 and 2021 Sofia Open champion Jannik Sinner made a solid start at this year’s event, defeating Portugal’s Nuno Borges in an hour and 26 minutes in the second round on Thursday.

Sinner, who had received a first-round bye, didn’t face a single break point in the match, but the World No. 10 broke his opponent once in each set to cruise to a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The Italian served 10 aces and won 89% of his point on the first serve.

He also struck 25 winners and made 20 unforced errors during the match.

The 21-year-old improved his season record to 44-13. While he has had plenty of wins under his belt this year, he will be disappointed to have fallen in the quarterfinals seven times this year. The only time he went past the last eight stage it was in Umag, where he went on to win the title y beating Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner, who had beaten Vasek Pospisil for the Sofia title in 2020, had ousted Gael Monfils in the final last year. He is off to a good start this year. Can he go on to complete a hattrick?
