The 2019 Fed Cup quarter-finals that begin on February 9, has an exciting line-up of women’s tennis players including the likes of Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Garcia, Ash Barty and Aryna Sabalenka.
The quarter-final line-up has top-seeded Czech Republic taking on Romania, France playing Belgium, Germany up against Belarus and USA facing Australia this weekend and some of the top match-ups in women’s tennis will be on show.
Third seeded Halep will lead the Romanian challenge in their tie against the Pliskova-led Czech Republic. Pliskova’s recent Australian Open performances have propelled her to number five on the WTA charts and this will be her 10th meeting with the Romanian. Halep is 6-3 ahead on head to head against Pliskova, having played each other once in the Fed Cup.
That meeting came way back in 2016 where Pliskova was a winner in a tough three-setter, helping her country to a 3-2 victory over Romania as well.
In another quarter-final that will be played at the Country Hall du Sart-Tilman, Liège in Belgium, Elise Mertens, ranked 12th in the world, will lead the hosts’ challenge against the Caroline Garcia-led French team. Alize Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic will be in action as well for France.
Belarus should start off as a favourite in their tie against Germany who will be missing Angelique Kerber for this one.
While the match-up will be hosted at the Volkswagen Halle Braunschweig, Braunschweig in Germany, the likes of Sabalenka, who has jumped to number nine in the WTA rankings and two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka should all prove to be handful for Tatjana Maria, Andrea Petkovic and Mona Barthel.
And in the last Fed Cup quarter-final tie, USA’s world number 17 Madison Keys will take on the 13th-ranked Aussie Ash Barty in another of an exciting match. Recent star performer at the Australian Open Danielle Collins will also be in action for USA while Daria Gavrilova takes to court for Australia.
