Pedro Martinez v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, and that was at the start of this year in Sydney, Martinez winning in straight sets.

Martinez Enduring Dismal Run
Like most Spanish players, Martinez is happiest on clay and won his first senior title on that surface in Chile in February. By reaching the third round in Miami the following month, he gave signs of adaptability, but he is in the middle of a dismal run right now.
Since reaching the quarter-finals in Kitzbuhel in July, he has lost eight matches in a row.
That sequence continued with a first round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald of the USA in Seoul last week.
Can he now turn things around in Tokyo against a player who has himself had form issues?

Popyrin Failing to Fulfil Potential
So far, Popyrin has failed to fulfil the potential he showed when he won the Singapore Open last February, and is in danger of falling out of the top 100 by the season’s end, which could affect his automatic eligibility for tournaments in 2023.
One problem has been his inability to get beyond the second round of events, and it is fast becoming a psychological barrier that needs to be overcome.
That was the stage he reached at the US Open before losing to Diego Schwartzman, but he did not even get that far in his last tournament in San Diego.
He was beaten in three sets by compatriot James Duckworth.
Martinez v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
The good news for one of these out of form players is that there has to be a winner in Japan. Given the run that Martinez is enduring right now, Popyrin might well believe it could be him.
